The greatest asset to Maria Behety guests are the 100 prime pools on 32 private miles of the lower Rio Grande. This means anglers and their guides can move to where the fish are, be it down in the estuary or in the upper reaches of their property. Guests at Estancia Maria Behety can also fish both sides of the Rio Grande. No other Tierra del Fuego fishing lodge has this much access to the Rio Grande.

Private access to the estuary makes fishing in December that much better. During the winter, these fish remain relatively close to the estuary so it’s common to start seeing good numbers enter into the river mouth in early December. Very few anglers venture to the Rio Grande during this time, but the powerful, bright chromers are there. In late December and early January the fishing can be phenomenal and the entire 32 miles of river is shared by the very few who take advantage of this early season fishing.

Catch rates obviously vary with weather, skill levels and return numbers, but it’s safe to say the average angler catches somewhere around 5 fish per day, averaging 12-13 pounds.

Once you arrive at the Rio Grande Airport, you’ve only 15 minutes before you arrive at Estancia Maria Behety Lodge and are welcomed into their deluxe fishing lodge. The lodge was built about 12 years ago, and has 8 rooms with a capacity of 16 people; however the number of anglers is restricted to only 12. Estancia Maria Behety Lodge offers extra rooms for guests wishing to room alone. All bedrooms have two comfortable double beds and private bathrooms with deluxe showers.

    Yokanga

    Summary

    • The Yokanga is situated inside the Arctic Circle at about 67.5 degrees north latitude.
    • The waters of the Yokanga are home to some of the largest Atlantic salmon on the Kola Peninsula.
    • Guests at the lodge may fish over 55 km of the Yokanga.
    • The fishing is accessed by helicopter on most days.
    • Two rods share a guide.
    • Deep wading is difficult so in most scenarios fishing is either from the boat or paddling down the edge of the bank.
    • Home Pool is but a short walk away from the lodge.
    • The lodge can comfortably accommodate up to 16 people.

The Yokanga is situated inside the Arctic Circle at about 67.5 degrees north latitude. The river flows into the Barents Sea and is on the north eastern end of the Kola Peninsula some 175 miles from Murmansk.

The waters of the Yokanga are home to some of the largest Atlantic salmon on the Kola Peninsula and provide a challenging environment in which to fish. This is true wilderness fishing venue with all creature comforts.

    Fishing

Guests at the lodge may fish over 55km of the Yokanga. The impressive waters cascade through a boulder-strewn course, creating some of the most diverse and varied fly fishing water imaginable. There are the rippled glides of pools like Lyliok and the deep and rushing draws of Upper Norcamp.

The fishing is accessed by helicopter on most days. Once at your beat the guide blows up the boat which is used for crossing pools and making speedy progress through the slow lake sections. Two rods share a guide and one rod at a time can fish from the boat to cover lies that simply could not be covered from the shore.

Challenging is an ample description for fishing the Yokanga. Deep wading is difficult so in most scenarios fishing is either from the boat or paddling down the edge of the bank. The nature of the river and complexity of the water definitely favours the confident caster and knowledgeable salmon fisher who can read water. That said, many have caught their first salmon on Yokanga.

Challenging though it may be, fishermen aged over 80 have successfully fished the Yokanga. Taking it slowly and not wading out of your comfort zone combined with the usual helping of perseverance required in salmon fishing is a good recipe for success. The Yokanga salmon are also notoriously aggressive and often will move several yards to take your fly, doing some of the job for you!

    Food and Lodging

The lodge is set high on a bluff overlooking several miles of the Yokanga itself. It is a Canadian-built log cabin that was imported and constructed on the river bank.

The lodge can comfortably accommodate up to 16 people in a combination of double and single rooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom with a generous supply of hot water to the power shower.

The open-plan upstairs sitting room and dining room are where tales are told of encounters with leviathans from the day’s adventures.

A well-stocked fly-tying bench completes the upstairs living area together with cable TV for the unlikely event of wanting to keep in touch with the real world.

Home Pool is but a short walk away as are the popular pools of Boulder Alley and Lyliok which has seen many a big fish battle over the years.

  • Seychelles

    Seychelles

292 miles southwest of Mahe lies the St François Lagoon and adjacent Alphonse Island, part of the Amirantes group of Islands. Alphonse is the one of the famed saltwater destinations of the Indian Ocean and perhaps home to the most prolific Bone fishery in the world. In addition to the abundant bonefish (ranging in size from 3 – 8 lbs) there are three species of Trigger fish, five species of Trevally and a plethora of other flats and offshore species. Perhaps the most challenging fish to catch is the fabled Milkfish; a turbo charged algae eater growing to 40lbs. The guides on Alphonse Island have pioneered techniques which have allowed these vegetarian and notoriously difficult fish to be caught. This diversity gives the angler the opportunity to target a myriad of different species during the course of one trip.

The fishery caters for just 12 anglers, two per skiff and guests are guided by some of the most experienced saltwater guides. Anglers are transferred for the short run from Alphonse to St François lagoon by the 40’ mothership to where the skiffs are kept anchored. The fishing is very much tide dependent so the prevailing conditions will dictate which species you will focus on. You are then able to access the vast expanse of flats, lagoons, channels and reefs which spoil anglers in the choice of environment and species for which they would like to hunt.

Combined with the fabulous fishing, the accommodation at Alphonse is amongst some of the most comfortable of any fishing camp in the world. Guests stay in one of 15 privately spaced air conditioned bungalows or 4 one bedroom villas, offering every kind of comfort. Not only is it attractive for fishermen but also their partners who would like a week of relaxation. The bar area provides the ideal venue to relax in the evening breeze after a hard day on the flats and also houses the superb new restaurant serving fresh sea food of the highest quality. A standard package would include return flights from Mahe to Alphonse by charter plane; a short 45 minute journey. The seasons runs from early October to late May.

Season - 1 October to 31 May - There is however the option to book at other times with a minimum group of 6 pax. The trips will be based on a Sat/Sat week long trips, with the possibility to increase the package to a 10 day trip (Wed/Sat or Sat/Wed) should there be a minimum of 6 clients wanting to do so. There is also the option for private charters which will allow guests to come and go as they please.

Fly Fishing - As per this season there will be a max of 12 fly anglers on St François at any time. Alphonse and St François will continue with its strict no conventional fishing on the flats and reefs.

Bluewater - There will be 2 bluewater boats available for chartering. One will primarily be used for fly fishing and the other for conventional angling. There will be NO conventional angling next to the reef as the aim of the conventional boat will be purely for targeting pelagic species. We do require a considerable amount of fresh fish for the hotel guests and targeting pelagic species will have very little effect on our resident species.

“The Secret Is Out” The New Astove Island Lodge – The best saltwater fly fishing destination on this planet!

In recent years, Astove Atoll has become synonymous with catching the biggest GT’s in the Indian Ocean and is fast becoming known for one of the largest GT populations and variety of species. Its shallow lagoon with one small entrance that is surrounded by sheer drop-offs is truly unique. This lagoon is a sanctuary for juvenile fish that are often preyed on by the bigger species and it’s this attraction that makes it one of the best and wildest fly fishing destinations on this planet. Not only does Astove have big GT’s but also Bonefish, Permit, Barracuda, Milkfish, Bluefin Trevally, Triggerfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish and Marlin. It is a world filled with colour, where the daily dramas of a pristine ecosystem play out in front of your very eyes, a rare exclusive opportunity and privilege to gaze into a world, which has changed very little in the years that have passed. The “Wall” which runs the entire length of the Western side of the atoll drops off to over a 1000 meters within a few hundred meters from shore. It’s an amazing place that is teeming with both pelagic and resident fish species. Jacques Cousteau made this incredible place famous in 1956 when he filmed part of “The Silent World” along its edge. Now that the Astove runway and the new Astove lodge is complete, 6 lucky anglers per week will have this atoll all to themselves while staying on terra firma. The group will spend 7 nights in the lodge and have 6 and a half full days fly fishing and exploring this remote atoll. Teams will comprise of 2 anglers and 1 guide fishing either from a skiff or on foot depending on the chosen fishing area and tide. The accommodation is rustic but comfortable, comprising of 6 single occupancy bedrooms.

    Location & Getting There:

Astove Atoll is situated 570 nautical miles SW of Mahe. Guests are expected to arrive in Mahe the day before the trip and will meet at the domestic terminal a hour before the scheduled departure. The flight from Mahe to Astove is 2 hours 30 min.

    Cosmoledo Atoll Liveaboard Trips:

Alphonse Fishing Co operates professionally guided trips to one of the most remote fishing destination in the world. In past years, Cosmoledo has become known as the best GT fishery in the world and has become the benchmark for anglers searching for the ultimate saltwater flats destination. The sheer numbers and variety of fish species has amazed the fly fishing world, with anglers from across the globe queuing up to sample the ultimate fishing playground. After just completing numerous seasons we can now honestly say that this atoll has been rested and the fishing has rejuvenated itself to an untouched ecosystem full of hungry GT’s. It is a world filled with colour, where the daily dramas of a pristine ecosystem play out in front of your very eyes, a rare opportunity and privilege to gaze into a world, which has changed very little in the years that have passed. Cosmoledo is a stones throw away from the world heritage site of Aldabra, and in many respects resembles the latter, which is often referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. Menai and Wizard islands occupy the east and west points and were named after the two ships that explored the atoll on the Moresby Expedition in 1822. South Island stands near the main entrance to the inner lagoon, while the second smaller entrance is just south of Menai. The northern islands are interspersed with numerous islets and banks, all of which see good numbers of large fish.

Guests are expected to arrive in Mahe the day before the starting day of the trip, which commences with a charter flight to Assumption. The group will meet an hour before the scheduled departure time at the domestic or IDC hanger terminal. The flight from Mahe to Assumption is 2 hours 45 min onboard a private chartered Beechcraft 1900. Guests are met by the the crew at the landing strip and are then led on a 5 min walk to the bay where the live aboard will be anchored. The group will spend the days fishing and exploring the islands, flats and channels of Cosmoledo Atoll. On the last evening the mothership will cruise back to Assumption for where the charter flight will pick the group up.

    Location:

Cosmoledo Atoll 560 nautical miles SW of Mahe

Assumption Atoll 610 nautical miles SW of Mahe

    The Fishing:

Cosmoledo’s large white sand flats, lagoon edges and channels are without question ruled by the notorious Giant Trevally, so much so that it is often referred to as planet earth's GT headquarters! GT’s are however not the only species which can be found here in numbers. Bonefish, Milkfish, the finicky Indo-Pacific Permit and a host of Triggerfish species all call Cosmoledo home and hence make this truly special fishing destination.

    Security:

Even though the Seychelles water are considered to as safe there will be 3 security personal on board at all times as a precaution.

    Sydri Bru

    Summary

    • Season 24 June to 24 September

    • 2.5 kms beat. One rod

    • Average catch: 120 salmon

    • Very comfortable self-catering lodge (catering available)

    • Guide available

The Sog river lies in the south of Iceland, around a one hour drive to the east from Reykjavik. It is the largest spring-fed river in Iceland and runs from Lake Thingvallatn to its junction with the glacier-fed river Hvita although, due to hydro-electric installations, only some 12 kms are passable by salmon.

The Sog has a healthy population of salmon and arctic char. Most of the salmon are grilse in the 5 – 10 lbs range but a fair number of multi-sea-winter fish are caught each year ranging up to [25] lbs. The char average [1 lb] but run up to [8] lbs.

The Sydri Bru beat is the private left bank of the top [2.5/3] kms of the fishable section of the river and fishes one rod. It has [8] pools although the majority of fish are caught in the top (home) pool. Annual salmon catches on the beat range from [110 to 240] fish. Fishing is with either single-handed or light double-handed rods and floating lines.

As the water level in the river is controlled by the hydro-electric dams above the beat, low water, even in a dry summer, is not a problem.

The lodge at Sydri Bru is a self catering lodge, but full on board accommodation can be arrange up on request. The Lodge it is unusually spacious and comfortable for a fishing lodge with a large kitchen and sitting/dining area (with WIFI and TV), three double bedrooms and a family bathroom. The lodge is a short drive from the town of Selfoss which has a number of good restaurants and convenient shopping.

If our guests like the privacy at the lodge but rather like some fine dining instead of self catering,  Grimsborgir restaurant is only 5 min drive from the lodge. Grimsborgir restaurant welcomes our guest to therestaurant and bar.

Although the spin fishing at Turneffe is exceptional, we are primarily a fly fishing destination. We are privileged to have a large repeat customer base with anglers from the finest fly shops and outfitters around the world making Turneffe Flats their annual saltwater fly-fishing destination.

    Bonefishing

Bonefishing is a mainstay of our fishing, with miles of crystal clear, wadeable flats. While wading Turneffe's extensive turtle grass flats, you will sight fish to large schools of bonefish as well as smaller groups and singles. Our bonefishing is consistently good throughout the year.

    Permit Fishing

For the past decade, increasing numbers of saltwater anglers have developed a serious interest in the elusive permit. Turneffe Flats is one of a select group of saltwater destinations where you can experience the excitement of flats fishing for tailing permit with a reasonable opportunity to catch one. Our permit fishing is also consistently available throughout the year.

    Tarpon Fishing

Because tarpon are migratory, they are somewhat seasonal. Although some tarpon are around throughout the year, our prime season generally begins in April and continues to mid October. June, July and August are usually the best months for tarpon fishing. Most of our migratory tarpon are in the 70-90 pound range, but we see a few 150-200 pound monsters each year.

    Villa Maria

    Summary

    • Space for only 6 anglers and private access to 20km of the best fly water on the lower Rio Grande, an exclusive haven for small groups of discerning anglers.
    • Each week starts with an evening warm up session--most anglers will catch a trout or two the first night they arrive.
    • Villa Maria is a spey anglers paradise--long flat pools means less casting and more fishing.
    • The longest pools with Sea Run Trout fresh from the sea.
    • The most pools per angler per day--Only two anglers and their guide per beat-and three to seven pools per beat-different beats morning and evening.
    • Extensive beats make it possible to find a pool where wind is a help--not a hindrance.
    • In order to maximize your time on the river, there is a cabin on the river bank for lunch and siesta, a stunning setting in the wilds of Tierra del Fuego which allows angles to fish more and drive less.

    Location:

Villa Maria Lodge sits on the lower Rio Grande in the Tierra del Fuego region of Argentina.

    Fishing Program:

Guests will leave the lodge around 9 AM after breakfast each day, fly fishing until around 1 PM. Following lunch at the streamside mini-lodge, anglers will enjoy a traditional siesta (the hours of which will depend on the season) with guests returning to the river between 4 and 6 PM to fly fish until dark. Please be sure to bring your headlamp!

The first brown trout were stocked in Tierra del Fuego by John Goodall in 1935. Shipped from Puerto Montt in Chile, 60,000 “Salmo Trutta” eggs survived the arduous journey, to be planted on the Candelaria and McLennan Rivers, both tributaries of the Rio Grande. These fish eventually found their way to the sea, possibly attracted by the rich nourishment of the estuary. These sea-run brown trout now complete the yearly migratory cycle of salmonids, spawning during the summer months in freshwater.

Salmo Trutta remain in the river for a period of time which ranges between 1 and 4 years until their first migration to the sea, where they will feed and grow for about 6 months before their first return to freshwater, weighing approximately 6 lbs. Researchers have found trout which had spawned more than 6 times. A trout which as completed 4 cycles of returning to freshwater can weigh over 20 lbs. The frequency with which they return to freshwater is also an indicator that the fish face very few threats. Whilst also providing a very real example of the benefits of Catch and Release. Guided are equipped with nets and will assist guests in weighing and releasing fish without damaging them.
