There were some beautiful neap tides and so many great things to say about last week’s fishing at Alphonse and St. Francois. The weather played along all week with light winds from the South-East and very little cloud. The guides consider these tides and weather conditions to be the ultimate triggerfish bonanza and the number of triggers landed did not disappoint with 16 for the week.
After spending a week on Astove Atoll and a few days on Alphonse Island, our group of guests ended their mammoth trip with a grand finale on Cosmoledo Atoll.
Astove is know as a wild, remote and exclusive destination that is perfectly suited to small groups. Besides the amazing bonefishing inside the lagoon it’s a destination where guests go to have a shot at catching a wide array of species and often achieve a ‘Grand Slam’. Terry Donovan, Dave Hall and Jan Hradecky returned for their fourth trip to Astove Atoll in consecutive years. Week seven of the Cosmoledo Atoll season saw the much-anticipated return of four fishing buddies, Chris Bamford, John Wilson, Carl Heilman and Scott Trerotola. Joining them our best friends Jan Hradecky, Dave Hall and Terrence Donovan (TD).
Cosmoledo has been at its best on all accounts with sublime weather and the fish out in full force. GT’s, milkfish, triggerfish and bonefish all made a significant appearance and were willing to eat. Sadly the one species that alluded capture this week was the highly coveted indo-pacific permit.
St Francois lagoon is home to one of the largest and healthiest populations of bonefish in the Indian Ocean. These fish are our bread and butter and provide a great deal of action with their veracious appetites and blistering runs when other species prove tricky to catch. In spite of their large numbers, the movement of large schools of fish can sometimes be tricky to pin down to a science, this week however was one of the best weeks of the season in terms of bone fishing with nearly 700 fish successfully landed and released between 12 anglers.
“Be ready, anything can happen.” This is a comment that anglers hear from the Astove guides at any moment of the day. Stalking the surf edges looking for tailing triggerfish can often be interrupted by chaos. GT’s have an ability to appear and disappear quicker than you can un-hook your fly. This is what makes flats fishing in the Seychelles so remarkable, you never know what’s going to happen or what you’re going to see. This week a full complement of anglers arrived on the island all looking forward to see what all the fuss is about.
Another week just ended here at La Villa with a great group of guests and fine anglers - always fun!66 fish were landed with 15 fish over 15 pounds and 2 over 20 pounds. Average weight of sea-trout landed was 9.5 pounds.
This week saw the return of some familiar faces, with Joern and Maria joining ‘Lone star’ and bringing along good vibes, chocolate and good music. In addition, David, Suzie and Joe stayed on board for another week and completing the group John Ribic and Carla Kingsley from Montana.
